This is a love song of sorts which begins with an apology and develops into a realization that those childhood dreams which the writer failed to fulfill have in fact been exceeded by his actual lot in life and that the abandonment of childhood and childish expectations was no sacrifice

DIFFERENT DREAMS

If words were hard enough to break your heart

Or sharp enough to tear your dreams apart

Or cold enough to wake you from your sleep

Then I would lay my silence at your feet

Let my words be my sacrifice.

If I could lay my gaze on Paradise

Or glory set itself within my sight

But I had seen your face a final time

Then I would lay my head and close my eyes

Let this day be my sacrifice.

All that you keep

Are things that you remember

So take each closing day to put away

With your prized possessions.

If I could follow all my childhood dreams

And be the man the boy thought he would be

It's so much less that what's already mine:-

To see my own reflection in your eyes.

Different dreams are no sacrifice.

All that you keep

Are things that you remember

So take each closing day to put away

With your prized possessions.

If moments measure out a man's success

And memories are a measure of his wealth

Then even all the times I made you cry

Upon my life, are more than I could sacrifice.
